Product Description

Pathology is a medical speciality area primarily concerning the cause, origin and nature of disease. It involves the examination of tissues, organs, bodily fluids and autopsies in order to study and diagnose disease. There are mainly 3 types of tests as Routine, Clinical lab and Specialty tests. Routine tests are Common tests like Sugar, Cholesterol, HIV, Pap, Pregnancy etc. Clinical lab tests to monitor diseases and drug treatments. Then, Specialty tests are tests for Genetics, immunology, oncology, endocrinology and other critical areas. Pathology testing (in-vitro diagnosis) includes sample collection in the form of Blood, Urine and Stool. This is followed by analysing results using laboratory equipment and technology to derive useful clinical information for assisting in patient treatment.

As per Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), traditional diseases in India are increasingly being replaced by lifestyle diseases in the past two decades. High blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, diseases associated with smoking and drinking are mainly lifestyle diseases. Increasing prevalence of such lifestyle diseases, the range of diseases and their complexity have contributed to the necessity for pathology services. Globally, ~80% of physician diagnoses are a result of laboratory tests. It is therefore very important to have pathology laboratories in all accessible places including semi-urban or rural locations to arrive at the result of the disease occurred. Heightened physician awareness and the increasing patient requirement to avail of high-quality care have increased the demand for a good quality diagnostic centre. Advancement in medical technology, substantial demand, coupled with ongoing standardization of regulation and accreditation, have made this business an attractive investment opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs. However, proper planning and decisions regarding place, registrations and investment is something which has to be given importance. Definitely this growing business will earn a very decent income, if carried out in a much organised manner.

The diagnostic industry has emerged as an attractive segment in India's growing healthcare sector and is one of the fastest growing services in the country. The Indian diagnostic industry is highly fragmented and under-penetrated despite the presence of over One Lac laboratories. The national level Diagnostic chains command around ~19% market share and the major players are Apollo Clinic, Max Healthcare, Dr Lal Path Labs (DLPL), Metropolis Healthcare (METROHL), SRL Diagnostics (SRL) and Thyrocare Technologies etc. The domestic pathology market has been growing year on year with estimated market value at around Rs 30,000 Crores and the biggest growth is observed in tier 2 and tier 3 cities in India. General pathology is growing at 20 per cent rate and specialised pathology like biopsy, genetics, oncology, genomic sequencing growing at 30-35 per cent. This growth is primarily driven by change in demographics, increase in lifestyle diseases and higher income levels across all strata of society, rise in preventive testing, deeper penetration with asset-light expansion as well as spread of healthcare services and insurance. With increase in the number of patients day by day and high demand for Pathological services, there appears a huge opportunity for setting up Pathology Diagnostic Centres at potential or underserved locations.
