Product Description

PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles has become ubiquitous part of our day-to-day lives. As PET bottles are simply used and thrown away, one has to just look around to spot a PET bottle containing packaged drinking water, carbonated soft drinks, sports drinks, household cleaners, food trays or used for any other applications. Approximately 100 million plastic bottles are used and discarded every day, with 80% of them simply becoming non-biodegradable litter. Though most of these PET bottles are 100% recyclable, but most of us are not aware about its recyclable benefits. PET bottles, post use still carry a lot of value and recycled PET (r-PET) can be used in a wide variety of applications. This makes post-consumer PET bottles a very sought after item by waste collectors. It is observed that in the process of recycling, PET bottles can be collected, sorted, cleaned, grinded/shredded and made into ‘washed flakes’. These washed flakes are then used to make (predominantly) Polyester Staple Fibre (PSF). Polyester Staple Fibre (PSF) is a man-made fibre similar in appearance to cotton or wool fibre. Polyester Staple Fibre (PSF) is widely used in Textiles, Pillow covers, Cushions, Mattresses, Sleeping bags and Quilts in replacing conventional Cotton fibre. Approximately 8 to 12 bottles go into the making of a garment, a mattress needs about 120 bottles. Therefore, recycling of PET bottles has grown to become a Rs.3,500-crore industry today and they are becoming popular day-by-day.

There are various ways in which PET bottles reach the waste stream for recycling and Municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of the main source. Other sources include discarded PET bottles from Bus terminus, Railway stations, Airports, Hospitals, Hotels, Restaurants, Kiosks and Parks etc. Discarded PET bottles fetch waste collectors (rag pickers) around Rs 14-15/kg. These bottles are bought by Kabadiwallahs or waste traders, who employ people to segregate, sort and further sell it to large vendors or recyclers. In the process of segregation, the caps, neck rings, labels (non-PET components) etc. are removed and sorted based on colour (different colour fractions like transparent or uncoloured PET, Blue and Green colour PET and remainder into a mixed colour fraction) and grade of the bottles. Thereafter, the bottles are grinded/shredded, washed, dried and sold as what is called ‘washed flakes’. These washed flakes are sold at anywhere between Rs 50-110/kg as there are many large manufacturers across India who use ‘washed flakes’ as raw material. Thus, it reflects immense potentiality for entrepreneurs to start the recycling business of PET bottles in every urban and rural hamlets across India.
