Chikki (also called as peanut brittle in western countries) is a ready to eat traditional sweet snack, which is popular throughout the country and consumed by all age groups. Most popular Chikkis are sourced from the Indian towns of Lonavala, Matheran, Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Karjat in Maharashtra and Bhuj in Gujarat.
Although Chikki is popular throughout the country, it originated in the Gujarat area. In the year 1888, when the construction of railway line was in progress, the workers needed something healthy and flavourful to eat, so Mr. Maganlal, India's oldest Chikki maker, invented this tasty snack. He had three reasons to give Chikki to the workers - it was healthy, flavorful and affordable to almost everyone. Today, Chikki is often recommended to pregnant women who are struggling with the intake of required daily nutrients.
Groundnut Chikki is extremely popular in India as it is full of protein and iron, making it a healthy snack. Traditionally, peanuts are used in the preparation of Chikki, but cashews, almonds, and walnuts can also be used. Chikki is prepared by mixing various types of nuts and other ingredients either with jaggery or sugar. These ingredients are mixed with thick syrup made of jiggery or sugar. The mixture is cooled and then smaller pieces are made and packed. There are several different varieties of Chikki in addition to the most common groundnut Chikki. Chikki making business can be started anywhere in India.
